We Should Be Happy: No Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 DLC
Insomniac Games finally address the mystery regarding downloadable content.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is about to be one year old. Since the game launched exclusively on the PlayStation 5, millions of fans have been swinging around the bigger New York City landscape while fighting against Kraven and Venom.
At New York Comic Con 2024, the team announced the game will be arriving on PC on January 30, 2025. It’s a collaboration with Nixxes Software who helped port several PlayStation Studios games including the previous Marvel’s Spider-Man projects.
The game will include all post-launch content including New Game+ and other quality of life changes. Furthermore, the game will have a Digital Deluxe Edition which includes five exclusive suits for each Spider-Man, early suit/gadget unlocks, five skill points, and more Photo Mode items.
The game is coming to Steam and the Epic Games Store, likely for $59.99.
“No additional story content planned for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2,” said Insomniac Games.
Ever since the massive Insomniac Games leak, fans got a glimpse into future plans for the Burbank studio. Including a look at what the plan for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 post launch.
From my recollection, the documents showed multiple pieces of DLC planned, all free for the player. Characters like Chameleon and Carnage would get extended story-lines that would hopefully lead into Marvel’s Spider-Man 3.
In the fan bases’ mind, this was going to be The City That Never Sleeps DLC but much better. At no cost to the player and about new villains we were excited about.
After the security breach, Insomniac Games continued to recover, keep their heads down, and work on games behind the scenes. Despite all this, fans were now clamoring for news related to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 DLC.
No matter what the social media person posted, there would be at least one user asking or referencing downloadable content. In the announcement for the PC release, Insomniac’s Senior Community Manager, Aaron Jason Espinoza, said:
While we have no additional story content planned for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, we’re delighted to bring all of our previously released post-launch content to the PC version…
Now that Insomniac Games fully know that DLC is not in the cards for this game, I’m happy with their decision.
Why I’m Happy There’s No Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 DLC
I fell in love with the sequel to 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man. While I have yet to play New Game+ and only have one playthrough under my belt, I recognize the technical feats and achievements this game holds.
It’s not a perfect sequel by any means but with certain behind the scene shuffles between Insomniac Games and PlayStation, the team did its best given the circumstances.
I have never asked or even desired more of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 from Insomniac Games. Especially after the leaks, there’s no reason to bombard the social media person after every post about “wHeRe’S tHe DLC?”
Sure, it would’ve been awesome to explore more of Insomniac’s Spider-Man world but I have a feeling the team is saving it for something special. Given the team’s track record with the IP and their love for the webhead, churning out the DLC as planned was likely not going to fulfill Insomniac Games creatively.
Financially, yes (if this DLC wasn’t free). But given how Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s story unfolded and multiple elements being changed due to Sony’s desperate need for a 2023 holiday seller, Insomniac Games’ hands were tied.
Now, in control once more, the team is able to decide if they wish to continue to make Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 content or make Marvel’s Wolverine their best game yet.
The most important reason as to why I’m happy there’s no more Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 DLC is because the community can now shut up about it. Expecting something from stolen documents dumped online was never going to lead to a satisfying ending.
Hopefully Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 launches on PC in a stable state and PC players get to enjoy one of the best games of 2023.
