SEGA delisting Sonic Genesis Games
Their 2nd mistake with Sonic Origins
In a PR email sent by SEGA, they will be delisting classic Sonic the Hedgehog games that will be featured in Sonic Origins. Sonic 1, CD, 2, and 3 & Knuckles stand-alone titles will be leaving digital stores on May 20th, 2022, less than one month from now. By doing so, after May 20th, the only way to play these games will be through Sonic Origins which will be released on June 23rd, 2022 on PS4/5, Xbox One/Series X|S, and Steam/Epic Games Store. The exceptions to the rule include Sonic 1 and 2 on the Nintendo Switch, part of the SEGA Ages series and Sonic 2 for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pass.
My Take
I’m not a big fan of SEGA’s decision here. After the backlash they received from the DLC chart for Sonic Origins’ Digital Deluxe Edition, removing the stand-alone versions of each respective game is another blow they’ll have to take from the internet. This limits how players in the future want to play these classic games digitally. What if someone wants to play Sonic CD again after not playing it since their childhood but are forced to buy the $40 version that includes other Sonic titles they may not want to play? I wouldn’t be surprised if this hypothetical individual went to emulation to avoid the paywall. I understand Sonic Origins remastered these games with new bells and whistles but not offering to sell any of these games individually is a shame. Maybe they’ll offer them in the future or before the release but I highly doubt it. SEGA has been really quiet about their intentions with this collection after the internet’s outcry last week regarding the DLC chart. I wouldn’t be surprised if they stay quiet once again…
