More Sonic. More Speed. And Knuckles.

Review of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (film)

It’s been 24 hours since I watched Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (film).
It was everything I expected and more.

After watching Sonic the Hedgehog (film) in 2020, I was pleasantly surprised with the movie. The studio was able to take the source material and make changes that made sense for this new version of the character. It was fun, witty, and above all else, Sonic.

onic the Hedgehog 2 (film) follows up from the first film. After sending Dr. Eggman to Mushroom Planet, Sonic is playing the hero of Green Hills. Tom Wachowski, Sonic’s adoptive dad, notices that Sonic still has a lot of learning to do as he’s young and reckless in his heroic endeavors. Tom and his wife, Maddie, leave for a wedding in Hawaii and leave Sonic to his own devices. Dr. Eggman manages to escape Mushroom Planet and along the way, meets Knuckles the Echidna. Knuckles is on his quest to find the Master Emerald, a jewel that grants the user magnificent power. To avoid spoilers, Miles “Tails” Prower manages to get tangled up in this adventure but believe me, it makes sense in how he gets introduced. It’s a race to find the Master Emerald before Dr. Eggman and Knuckles.

Just like its predecessor, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (film) respectfully takes the source material of the classic games and turns it into a fun blockbuster film appropriate for kids and adults, especially for fans of Sonic the Hedgehog. Elements from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 & 3’s (Sega Genesis) stories are utilized very well. Not everything is used but the elements they went with are very much welcoming. There are more easter eggs and references to the Sonic universe which is awesome to see. Being able to flex my Sonic knowledge by pointing out the easter eggs was a blast. If you know more about Sonic than the average person, you’ll probably understand what references I’m talking about after you see the movie. Additionally, the film is able to connect certain dots from the first film which I greatly appreciate. This movie feels like a continuation of the first film which is all I’m really asking for. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (film) was able to deliver on that expectation and then some.

Ben Schwartz nails it once again as the blue blur. He’s the newest actor to voice Sonic and he’s amazing in this film. Definitely one of my favorite actors to voice the character. Colleen O’Shaughnessey is reprising her role as Tails for this movie. She’s been voicing Tails since 2014 in the games and she fits right at home in this film. It’s fun seeing Sonic and Tails bond into their iconic friendship that will last for the rest of these movies. Knuckles is voiced by Idris Elba who was a shocking casting choice but welcoming nevertheless. Elba delivers a performance for Knuckles that fans will love from beginning to end. They’re able to make a version of this character that ties directly back to Sonic which makes him all the more interesting. The time dedicated to fleshing out Knuckles’ backstory and character was great to see. Jim Carrey returns as Dr. Eggman and yeah, he’s still got it. Carrey is Dr. Eggman and delivers another cartoony performance as the crazed scientist. The other human characters get some time in the spotlight but it’s not substantial. I thought their sidestory away from Sonic was fine. Not bad but still relevant to the movie’s story. It could’ve been a bit shorter though.

The comedy this time around is the same corny, goofy jokes. Some will land, others won’t. All of the jokes were in good taste and fun though. Every character gets a chance to be a goof ball at one point or another in the movie. Not to say the movie can’t get hype and serious for a second. This movie is rated PG once again, so don’t expect Sonic to say a curse word.

The visual effects are top notch once again. Sonic and friends look phenomenal and blend right in with the human characters. There was one scene in the snow that looked a bit sketchy but otherwise, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles look great in the movie.

Overall, I had an awesome time watching Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (film). My expectations were for more adventures with Sonic & Tails and Knuckles tagging along. I got that and more. This movie is so much fun, especially for fans of the blue blur. I was surprised by the storytelling in this movie, being able to introduce Tails and Knuckles in an organic way to kids who might only know Sonic through these movies. If you enjoyed the first movie, go see this movie. If you’ve been a fan of Sonic the Hedgehog at any point in your life, go see this movie. If you know nothing about Sonic the Hedgehog, the movie is still an enjoyable time. This could be your gateway into the character because the movie does a decent job recalling certain events from the first movie. Be sure to stay for the after credit scene because it does set up a Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (film).
