The NES era platformer is back over 30 years later. #FreeCode

Gimmick! originally released on the Famicom back in 1992. The game never released outside of Japan and Scandinavia until the remaster launched in the Summer of 2023. A year later, Gimmick! 2 was announced and released earlier this month.

Because it never made a big splash in the West, I knew almost nothing before diving into the sequel.

Gimmick! 2 is a precise 2D platformer with puzzle elements. I was surprised by its level of challenge and core mechanics never switching up. The journey from point A to point B is never straight forward. It’s up to you to figure out how to unlock doors, defeat enemies, and overcome obstacles to advance.

Jump and throw stars in Gimmick! 2

The little green guy, Yumetaro, can jump and summon a star to throw at enemies, solve puzzles, or ride on it if you’re precise enough. These are all the controls; no double jump, no run button, and no other special powers. Throwing a star or jumping is pretty much what you’ll be doing throughout the game’s adventure.
